Childrens Books: Books For Girls

post time 22. June 2008 member admin

There are all kinds of books written for girls. As an adolescent I really enjoyed the Judy Blume books, Are You There God, Its Me Margaret and Then Again, Maybe I Wont. In the time they were written, they were considered cutting edge and gave life lessons that girls wouldnt have normally received. Now, there are hundreds of books that offer real-life scenarios for girls to read.

There are adventure and fantasy books for girls as well. Some girls enjoying reading about Native Americans and may find a book such as The End of Forever by Denise Page Caraher interesting to read. Tagger Alone on the Mystic River by J.A. Louthain is about a girl in 1828 who is sold into servitude in Connecticut.

There are a number of genres appropriate for female readers. While most girls prefer female protagonists, novels with male lead characters should not be ruled out. In a similar vein, many parents encourage their daughters to read books with science-related themes to encourage their girls to pursue their interests in math and science at a time when many girls begin to lose interest.

Girls these days can have a hard time with body image. They are bombarded by music videos and commercials with impossibly lean models and dancers. Some girls can, unfortunately, end up having eating disorders such as bulimia, anorexia and obesity. Theres a book called Gentle Eating: Getting Your Power by Skip Sauvain that teaches teens how to cope with food addiction. In addition to providing information for girls, books are a great springboard for discussions.

Childrens Books: Books For School Libraries

post time 21. June 2008 member admin

School libraries are a great place to find classic books and newer books. Sometimes if youve read a book youve enjoyed, you can recommend it to the school library. Librarians are usually pretty easy to talk to and are always open to adding to the schools collection, if the budget allows it.

Some publishing companies offer great deals to school libraries. Sometimes you have to buy in bulk, though. If a teacher is ordering a certain book for her classroom, she may be able to get extra copies for the library. When selecting books, its important to keep in mind that, although everyone says you cant judge a book by its cover, most of us know that we do in fact judge a book by its cover. Many modern day books have interesting and colorful covers that may entice a reluctant child to read.

Author Visits Promote Reading
One way to promote reading for children is to have an author come into the library and give a talk and a reading. Children, like many of us, love to meet the people behind the words. If an author comes to a school, children are more likely to check out his books.

Books for school libraries can cover a variety of subjects. You may want to add books about historical events. For libraries of elementary schools, its important to make sure that these books are accessible to the students intellectually and are engaging as well. Many times authors use animals to explain significant events such as 9/11. Using animals as main characters tends to keep children interested in a story. You can also add books about food addiction and other serious topics.

Childrens Books: Help With Obesity

post time 19. June 2008 member admin

Obesity is a growing problem for children and adults alike. Part of the problem is fast food. The other problem is that people just arent as active as they used to be. The advent of technology means that children dont even have to leave the house to play video or computer games. In the old days, kids had to go to an arcade to play games.

To get your child on track for losing weight you can encourage him to go for walks. If you live near a park or a woods, you can take the time to explore nature. You can find books such as Jeramiah Stokely, Naturalist by Alan K. Garinger that tells you a bit about nature. You can order a kit that comes with a journal and poster to help you identify plants, birds and animals.

Eating right is another way to lose weight. Kids these days are bombarded by images from rock videos and commercials that relay contradictory images. Thin people are shown eating fast food. Children of both sexes may develop eating disorders. You can find books that can help children with food addiction. Gentle Eating: Getting Your Power by Skipp Souvain may be helpful in helping you or your child deal with eating issues.

Set an Example
If you are trying to overcome obesity, it may help to keep in mind that it is your job to set an example for your children. In other words, try to encourage your child to eat properly by eating right yourself. Keep the fridge filled with fruits and vegetables. Dont skip breakfast and reach for a glass of water instead of a glass of pop. Not only can you both lose weight, but you may save some money on dental work as well.
