School libraries are a great place to find classic books and newer books. Sometimes if youve read a book youve enjoyed, you can recommend it to the school library. Librarians are usually pretty easy to talk to and are always open to adding to the schools collection, if the budget allows it.

Some publishing companies offer great deals to school libraries. Sometimes you have to buy in bulk, though. If a teacher is ordering a certain book for her classroom, she may be able to get extra copies for the library. When selecting books, its important to keep in mind that, although everyone says you cant judge a book by its cover, most of us know that we do in fact judge a book by its cover. Many modern day books have interesting and colorful covers that may entice a reluctant child to read.

Author Visits Promote Reading
One way to promote reading for children is to have an author come into the library and give a talk and a reading. Children, like many of us, love to meet the people behind the words. If an author comes to a school, children are more likely to check out his books.

Books for school libraries can cover a variety of subjects. You may want to add books about historical events. For libraries of elementary schools, its important to make sure that these books are accessible to the students intellectually and are engaging as well. Many times authors use animals to explain significant events such as 9/11. Using animals as main characters tends to keep children interested in a story. You can also add books about food addiction and other serious topics.
